The new Self-Portrait store in Bangkok expands on the design explorations seen in the brand’s other flagship locations. The store’s design centers around two primary elements that create a dynamic interplay between materiality and perception.
The first element is the base layer, featuring a soft, pastel-colored mineral backdrop. Here, cornflower blue terrazzo, clay, and quartzite—a blend of marble and crystal—are used to create a serene and cohesive environment. This layer establishes a calming foundation, setting the tone for the store’s overall aesthetic.
The second element is the use of mirrors in varying scales. These giant, full-height mirrors challenge the viewer’s sense of space by blurring the lines between reflection and reality. This mirroring concept extends to the way the stone walls and floors are designed. Book-matched stone, with its mirrored patterns, folds both vertically and horizontally to create distinct areas within the store. Each zone seamlessly integrates display spaces and seating elements, all carved from the same stone. This approach gives the stone an organic quality, making it feel like a living organism that adapts and mutates to serve different functions.
Mirror polished, stainless furniture, feature curved surfaces, with reflections that are deliberately distorted and liquid-like. To soften the overall aesthetic, fur coverings and velvet pillows are added to the furnishings, providing a tactile contrast to the sleek, reflective surfaces.
Even though complex in its geometry and variations, the monochromatic tectonic palette provides a quiet backdrop that allows the clothing to take center stage.
